Tipperary TD calls for an urgent review of heating regulations as fuel poverty rises

Independent TD for Tipperary Mattie McGrath has demanded a rollback on what he says are 'restrictive heating regulations'

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has launched a scathing critique of the outgoing government's green agenda, demanding an immediate reversal of regulations that effectively limit traditional home heating methods in Ireland. Speaking from his South Tipperary constituency this morning, McGrath highlighted the growing crisis of fuel poverty and its impact on rural communities.

"The outgoing government's misguided green policies are forcing our most vulnerable citizens to choose between warmth and sustenance," McGrath declared. "We're witnessing an alarming surge in fuel poverty, with nearly a third of Irish households now spending over 10% of their income on energy. This short-sighted approach is leaving people out in the cold, quite literally."

McGrath emphasized the need for a pragmatic approach to climate action that doesn't sacrifice basic comfort and affordability. "The next government must prioritize rolling back these overly restrictive planning laws. New homes should have the option to include chimneys if desired. Not everyone can afford expensive heat pumps or underfloor heating systems, and we shouldn't be following Germany's misguided example."

The South Tipperary representative warned of the consequences if action isn't taken swiftly. "If we continue down this path, we'll see the extinction of open fires in Ireland within a few years - a prospect I vehemently reject. Our rural communities have relied on turf and wood fires for generations, not just for heat but as a cornerstone of our cultural heritage."

McGrath called for a comprehensive review of current energy policies. "We need a balanced approach that respects our traditions while moving towards cleaner energy. The next government must reassess the Climate Action Plan 2024 and its unrealistic targets for district heating and heat pumps. These technologies have their place, but not at the expense of affordable, traditional heating methods."

The TD concluded with a stark message for policymakers: "It's time to put the well-being of Irish citizens first. We can't allow overzealous green policies to freeze out our most vulnerable. The next government must act decisively to ensure that every Irish home has access to affordable, reliable heating options. Anything less is a failure of leadership and a betrayal of our people."
