BRILLIANT! Tipperary couple honoured for lifelong fundraising efforts with worldwide charity

Tom and June Williams from Cloughjordan were among 24 individuals recognised at a special ceremony hosted by humanitarian organisation Concern Worldwide, celebrating their outstanding efforts in raising funds for some of the world’s most vulnerable communities.

The couple were hailed by Concern as “steadfast supporters” driven by “a deep desire to help those most in need.” Over the years, they have raised more than €14,000 through Church gate collections alone.

“Their long-standing dedication is a shining example of community spirit and quiet generosity that makes a real difference,” the charity said.

At the ceremony held in Concern’s Dublin city offices, the Williamses received medals honouring their “outstanding commitment.”

Tom, a former member of the popular 1960s Majorca Showband who continues to sing with his local choir, stood proudly with June, who has been fundraising for Concern since 1988.

“We were delighted to get the award,” June said. “We do it because we want to help out and didn’t expect any award for it.”

Joanne Arnold, Concern’s Community Fundraising Manager, expressed gratitude to all the organisation’s supporters, “We are grateful to all our volunteers and supporters who help us reach millions of people living in extreme poverty and hunger every year.”

She highlighted the impact of volunteers across various initiatives, from fundraising to education, “Concern’s work continues despite many challenges. The families we support in places like Sudan and Gaza cannot be reached without the support we get from our volunteers.

“They include the adjudicators who help us run Concern Debates, which has been hugely successful in getting students thinking and talking about the many issues the world faces.”

The Concern Volunteer Awards were established in 2013 to celebrate the vital contribution of volunteers across Ireland.

In 2024 alone, the organisation reached 27.3 million people in 27 countries through its work alleviating poverty and hunger.
