3M Ireland (a leading supplier of innovative solutions to the electrical, electronics and telecommunications industries) celebrates bringing sustainability and science to 15,000 senior primary school children nationwide, over the past three years, with the organisation’s sponsorship of Junior Achievement’s innovative science programme, Our Universe.

This programme was taught by Boston Scientific employee, Clare O’Brien, in Ss Peter and Paul’s. Over a five week period the students increased their awareness of science and the role it plays in industry in Ireland. Through hands-on activities they carried out chromatography experiments, conducted an energy audit of their classroom, made periscopes and learned about the functions of the human skeleton. To mark the end of the classroom programme, Clare invited the students to Boston Scientific for a tour of the facility and a further opportunity to learn more about the real world of science.

Helen Halpin from Junior Achievement Ireland said “The students found the Our Universe programme extremely enjoyable and interesting. The class was given the opportunity to investigate many scientific experiments in a hands-on, concrete and fun manner. The students were engaged in each activity and they thoroughly enjoyed the opportunities to explore various areas of the science curriculum.

Clare from Boston Scientific was excellent, she related very well to the students providing relevant and educational information. The tour of the Boston Scientific plant was a fantastic way to end the programme.”
