'Winter storm' expected later this week

Met Eireann is warning that weather conditions will take a turn for the worse on Wednesday with snow predicted.

While temperatures in Tipperary are extremely cold today, Sunday, there was little frost overnight but the current freezing cold temperatures are here to stay, the national forecaster believes.

Met Eireann says we will have continued normal weather with sun and rain in the coming days, but that things will take a turn for the worse on Wednesday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Fog will clear quickly this morning as southwesterly winds freshen.

"Otherwise dry and bright for the first half of the day but cloud will increase in the afternoon with rain developing towards evening.

"The southwesterly winds will also freshen through the day. Highs of 7 to 9 degrees.

"Rain will continue for the first half of the night with the rain turning to showers later on. Southwesterly winds will become more westerly in direction through the night. Lows of 4 to 6 degrees.

 
"Monday will be a cold bright day with heavy showers at times. Daytime temps will be around 5 or 6 degrees in blustery westerly winds.

"A cold, windy Tuesday with widespread heavy showers merging to longer spells of rain across the western half of the country; some of the showers will be wintry. Highs of 2 to 5 degrees."

From Wednesday, conditions will worsen as the winter storm moves across the country.

The forecaster added: "Cold and windy for much of Wednesday with further showers.

"Temperatures rising during the evening as heavy rain and strong winds develop overnight with the passage of a winter storm across Ireland."

Thursday and Friday will again be the same with very wintry weather.
