Back to back Tipperary senior cross country men’s titles for Mooreabbey Milers AC

The Mooreabbey Milers men’s and women’s teams at the county senior championships at Cashel on Sunday last

A trip to the leased farmlands of Michael Ryan of Dundrum AC just outside Cashel, Co Tipperary was where 11 men and three ladies from the club were last Sunday morning, with the County Senior title down for decision and what a decider it was, with our boys looking for the double.

A 10k (2k by 5 lap) on very heavy grass was to separate the men from the boys and a 6k (2k by 3 lap) was to be the decider for the ladies.

The ladies were up first at 11am on the dry but blustery morning. Aoife Courtney ran a very solid race, leading the ladies home finishing in fifth place backed up by the sister duo of Mary Louise Ryan in sixth and Patricia Ryan. Again, it just seems to be our ladies position at the moment, a place just short of the podium in fourth.

At 11.40 it was the turn of the men in a quality field of runners. It was to take 30 plus minutes before this title was decided, with a lot of chopping and changing of places throughout the race. Charging home first for the purple and white brigade was Stuart Moloney in second place to take the silver medal, followed by Barry Hartnett in 5th, Tom Blackburn in 7th and Gerard Hanley in 13th to scoop the county senior title.

Our B team of Kevin Lenihan, Michael Bailey and Willie O’Donoghue packed well just behind them to take the gold B medals and the crowning glory was our C team of Michael Fitzgerald, Liam Lewis, Damien Holian and Dariusz Gazdowicz who squeezed even tighter to take the bronze B medals.
