An Garda Síochána have released a video demonstrating what motorists can expect during a roadside drugs test.
In the video - posted on X (formerly Twitter) today (March 5) - a Garda is seen asking a motorist for his license and informs him he will need him to provide "a specimen of oral fluid".
Under section 928 of the Road Traffic Act 2010, the motorist is required to provide this, and failure or refusal to comply can lead to arrest and a hefty fine.
In the video, the Garda explains the test can detect benzodiazepines, cannabis, amphetamines, methamphetamines, ecstasy, cocaine and opiates.
The test - which the Garda describes as "like an antigen test" - is then opened in front of the motorist, who is asked to "swirl" his tongue around his mouth.
A sample is then taken from the motorist's tongue.
After a few moments, the Garda informs the motorist he has passed the test.
In 2022, we introduced a new enhanced roadside drug-driving testing system which detects the presence of a wide range of illegal substances that can impair a person’s ability to drive safely.
