Tributes have been paid to a teenage boy who died after a crash between an e-scooter and a car in Kilkenny on Saturday evening.

The boy has been named locally as Joe Carthy, 14, from the Bonneststown area of the county, who tragically passed away on Sunday morning from his injuries.

The collision involving a car and the e-scooter the 14-year-old was travelling on occurred on Tullaroan Road in Bonnettstown shortly before 6:30pm on Saturday.

Emergency services rushed the teen to nearby St Luke’s General Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The local coroner was notified and a post-mortem was expected to take place yesterday. There were no other injuries reported.

The road was closed overnight to facilitate a technical examination of the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, which took place on Sunday morning and the road has since reopened to traffic.

In an emotional post on social media, the Kilkenny Traveller Company Movement wrote: “Heartbreaking news on the tragic passing of young Joe.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Carthy Family today. RIP Joe.”

A flood of tributes and condolences followed in the comments, with local TD Malcolm Noonan saying: “Deepest condolences to Joe's family and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilís.”

Another said: “I'm so shocked and saddened to hear the news of Joes passing, praying for all the family at this sad time.”

While a third wrote: “Sincere condolences to Paddy and Bridget on the death of their beautiful boy, to his siblings and the extended Carthy family.

“I have such fond memories of Joe. May he Rest in Peace.”

Gardaí are appealing to any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and were travelling on the Tullaroan Road between 6:00pm and 6:30pm to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.
