The Carrick Wheelers Cycling Club’s Past Members Memorial Cup is awarded to honour the memory of past members who have made an outstanding contribution to both the sport of cycling and to the club.

This year the Past Members Memorial Cup will be raced in memory and recognition of Pat Nugent.

Pat’s passion for cycling began in the 1970s, when he played a key role in promoting safe racing, both as a motorcycle marshal and a race lead car driver. In the 1980s, Pat took on the role of team manager for the club, driving riders and teams to races the length and breadth of Ireland.

He also managed the club’s team in the 1985 Junior Tour of Ireland. His love of cars and engine performance aways ensured a quick journey.

Carrick Wheelers Cycling Club was very fortunate to have Pat serve as Vice Chairman and Chief Steward during his time, dedicating himself to the sport and the club he loved.

On St Patrick’s Day, at the club’s annual race in Clonea, Pat’s daughter, Marie, will present this year’s Past Members Memorial Cup to the first rider in the C2 category.

The winner will add their name to the two previous winners of the cup, which includes the club’s very own Patrick O’Loughlin.

As the club organises its annual St Patrick’s Day race and prepares to present the third annual Past Members Memorial Cup in memory of Pat, it is a fitting time to reflect on his dedication to the sport and the club. May he rest in peace.
