Gambling support service launched in Cashel

Problem gambling has brought devastation to individuals and households across Ireland. We gamble almost €10,000 every minute, which equates to over €5bn each year in Ireland. Studies have shown that 150,000 people are at risk of problem gambling in Ireland, but this does not only impact the individual. An estimated 7-10 loved ones are impacted by the problem gambling of one individual.

With the advent of smartphones, each person has a mini-casino in their pockets, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; and the fall out of this problem has been horrific. On one level there is suicide, hospitalisation, self-harm, to marriage breakdown, hungry children, unpaid bills, to lying, stealing, court appearances, imprisonment and job loss. The impact of problem gambling can wreck lives and destroy the mental and physical health of individuals and families.

Eddie Kendrick, is an integrative counsellor who is working as a gambling support worker with Spafield Family Resource Centre (FRC) in Cashel. Eddie says there are two questions a person should ask themselves if they feel like they have a gambling problem and they are: Have I spent more money gambling than I planned to? And, have I ever lied about my gambling? If you have answered yes to one of these questions, then you may have an issue with gambling.

Eddie goes on to say “We are not anti-gambling, but we are a service that wants to help support those who may find that their gambling has gone out of hand, or that it is impacting themselves or others in a way that they don’t want”. Spafield FRC want to support those who feel that there is a need to look at their gambling and get the support that they need. 

Spafield FRC in Cashel operates a non-profit Gambling Therapy and Support Service that provides confidential advice, community education, support and counselling to those with a gambling problem and their loved ones in the wider Tipperary area.
