Clonmel Oil 2017 South Tipperary Senior Football Final Replay
Almost six months on from when it should have been played, and 12 weeks after the drawn final on the first Sunday of January, the 2017 South Tipperary Senior Football Championship has been re-fixed for Fethard (this afernoon) on Easter Monday (throw-in at 2 pm). But seemingly it is unlikely to go ahead at all with one club involved stating they will not be fielding a team.
Going head-to-head will be the defending champions Clonmel Commercials and local rivals Moyle Rovers who will be hoping to get their hands on divisional silverware for the first time since 2010 in which year their completed a five-in-a-row.
The drawn game which took place at Clonmel Sportsfield on a frost-bitten pitch ended 0-8 to 0-8 after extra-time. Moyle Rovers were lucky to force the game into extra-time with a late equaliser from county senior Liam Boland; while in extra-time it was Jamie Peters who saved Commercials bacon with an equalising point.
The seven-game National Football League hindered any prospects of a replay until now with both clubs having players involved in Liam Kearns’ Tipperary panel. For the drawn game Commercials were missing county players Michael Quinlivan and Ian Fahey (injured) and Seamus Kennedy (hurling commitments), and would be greatly strengthened by a return of all or any of trio. On the other hand Moyle Rovers have been the busier of the clubs of late with their under 21s going all the way to a county final including a South final victory over Commercials.
Hopefully for Monday’s replay both teams will field strong teams and like the drawn game it will be an exciting and entertaining spectacle. Hopefully too this saga will eventually play out to a definite winner this time.
