Fleadh Cheoil Co. Tiobraid Árann
Cill Shléibhe CCÉ are delighted to be hosting Fleadh Cheoil Thiobraid Árann 2018 which is being held in Templemore from the 14th-20th of May.
Last Monday the 14th saw the weeklong event kick off with an Oíche Amhránaíocht (singing circle) in O’Sullivan’s Pub Killea.
Tuesday 15th the Oíche Staire (Historical Talk) took place in the courthouse in Templemore. Frances Maxwell spoke on the history of the town of Templemore, Donnchadh Ó Cinnéide spoke on the history of fleadhs in Tipperary and Joe Barry spoke specifically about past Fleadhanna held in Templemore, with extracts from his book.
Wednesday 16th the Oíche Dramíocht (Drama Evening) will take place in the Templemore Arms Hotel. Children from four local primary schools, Killea NS, Castleiney NS, Loughmore NS and St. Josephs NS Templemore will take to the stage to perform a 20 minute drama piece in Irish to compete for the Seosamh McGabhann trophy. This is free entry on the night for anyone who would like to come along.
Thursday 17th the Oíche na Gradaim (awards night) will be held in The Templemore Arms at 8pm. This is a very special evening where an award is given to a local person/persons who have given exceptional service in the locality in promoting our traditional culture. This award is a surprise to the recipient, all will be revealed on the night.
Friday 18th will be Oscailt Oifigiúil (official opening). This night will be similar to the launch night held in Killea last month, guests will be treated to a night of entertainment featuring music, singing and dancing. The Fleadh will be launched on the night by Tipperary’s very own Labhrás Ó Murchu, Director-General Comhaltas Ireland.
Saturday 19th - 10am sees the start of the Fleadh competitions. Time tables for competitions can be found on our Facebook page Tippfleadh2018 and of course in the Fleadh Cheoil Program which will be on sale at all the events during the week at a cost of 5 Euro. The program also contains lots of articles and photos and will make a fantastic souvenir so be sure to pick up a copy.
A very special Fairy Trail led by Fairy Ash will start at 5pm in Templemore Park. There will be live music all around the trail which is sure to enchant both the young and the young at heart. This is a free event and a perfect way for families to spend an evening in Templemore and to head on down after to the gig rig in the Square.
The gig rig will kick off from 4:30pm in The Square, Templemore. Musicians from Our Lady’s Secondary School will open the gig rig followed by some local well known talent. We also have Cuisle Harp Ensemble playing at 6pm followed at 6:30pm by In Tune For Life Orchestra (50 piece orchestra). Our headline act, internationally recognised and award winning trad band Goitse will take to the stage at 8pm. This group have made a name for themselves as one of the most sought after bands in traditional music so to see them perform at The Fleadh is amazing and definitely not to be missed.
Sunday 20th Aifreann na Fleidhe will take place at the Church of The Sacred Heart, Templemore at 9am
Day 2 of competitions in Our Lady’s Secondary School and The Templemore Arms from 10am. Be sure to see our Facebook page and Fleadh Cheoil program for timetables, maps of the venues and parking locations.
The second of our Fairy Trails will begin at 3pm, again there will be live music along the trail. The gig rig will start at the earlier time of 3pm-7pm on Sunday with lots of music, song and dance. Taking to the stage at 4:30pm will be finalists of the Siansa Gael Linn music competition, Lonrach. Lively trad band and All Ireland Fleadh performers "Rigs and Jeels" will headline the gig rig on Sunday.
