Annie Donnelly and her father before setting off on the 60km cycle!
It’s not too late to register for the 23rd Annual Trip to Tipp. Local cycling group Blazing Bikers host the annual 60km or 120km sportive in memory of Lorraine Shannahan with all proceeds going toward working with people experiencing sight loss.
This is a landmark event which is fully inclusive and helps people who are blind or vision impaired find their feet on two wheels.
Nine-year-old Annie Donnelly learned how to ride a bike just one month before the Trip to Tipp 60km cycle in 2017. Annie has Achromatopsia, an eye condition which is a combination of night astigmatism and a sever sensitivity to light, which means she has distance vison of approximately 3-4ft. Annie learned to cycle to participate in the sportive and completed the 60km distance with her father, Eamon, on a tandem bike. Annie’s mother Kathleen commented: “When Annie finished the 60km, she got off the bike and cried, she was so chuffed.” Kathleen continued to say, “She feels very free when she is on the bike, her Father Eamon describes everything she cant see to her as they are cycling. It has been a great confidence booster for her.” Kathleen complimented the Trip to Tipp event; she said “It was an excellent event. It was ran very efficiently, the marshalling was excellent and it was very safe.”
