WATCH: Nenagh Ormond RFC open up before historic Division 1A debut vs Old Belvedere

After 141 years, Nenagh Ormond prepare for their Division 1A debut with momentum and belief

Nenagh Ormond Rugby Football Club is set to make history as it prepares for its first-ever season in Division 1A of the Energia All-Ireland League. Founded in 1884, the Tipperary club has long been a cornerstone of rugby in the county, combining a proud tradition of nurturing talent with a deep sense of community.

The 2024–25 season proved to be a turning point. Nenagh Ormond finished second in Division 1B before edging UCC 36–33 in a dramatic promotion play-off, sealing their place among Ireland’s elite. The club also captured its first Munster Senior Challenge Cup with victory over Old Crescent at Thomond Park, underlining the progress made in recent years.

Behind these achievements lies a sustained programme of development. Since 2017, significant investment in New Ormond Park has transformed the club’s facilities, including the installation of an all-weather pitch and enhanced training areas.

These improvements have boosted participation from minis to senior level, raised standards across all squads, and strengthened the club’s role at the heart of the local community.

That community connection remains central to the Nenagh Ormond story. Local businesses, sponsors, volunteers, and supporters have all contributed to the club’s rise, ensuring that its success is shared across the town.

This collective backing has lifted morale, increased numbers at every age group, and reinforced the values of inclusion and teamwork that define the club.

Attention now turns to the challenge of Division 1A. The historic opening fixture will take place at New Ormond Park on Saturday, September 27, when Nenagh Ormond host Old Belvedere. Club captain Kevin O’Flaherty leads a squad that has grown in depth, with increased numbers in training driving greater competition for places.

The revival of the under-20s team after a ten-year gap has also created a strong pathway for young players, ensuring a steady flow of talent into the senior ranks.

The immediate goal for Nenagh Ormond is to establish themselves at the top level while also making an impact in the Bateman Cup. With strong structures in place, a thriving youth system, and unwavering community support, the club enters this new era with confidence.

Nenagh Ormond’s rise is the product of years of planning, resilience, and collective effort. As they take their place in Division 1A, they carry with them 141 years of tradition and a determination to inspire the next generation of rugby players in Tipperary.
