A councillor warned of a potential flooding “catastrophe waiting to happen” in a Carrick-on-Suir town centre car park at a municipal district meeting last week and appealed to Tipperary County Council to investigate the problem.

Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District Engineer Michael Scully agreed to look into the drainage problem at the Strand Car Park that Fianna Fáil Cllr Kieran Bourke highlighted at the July meeting of the district’s councillors and officials in Carrick Town Hall last Thursday.

Cllr Bourke told Council management that during periods of heavy rain over the past two months the road gullies in the Strand Car Park haven’t been able to take the water.

“What I am asking is for you and your team to investigate whether the road gullies in Strand Lane Car Park are blocked. There is something going on there and it's a potential catastrophe waiting to happen,” he warned.

Strand Car Park is located between Main Street and the North Quay and in late December 2015 it was among the areas of the town flooded following extensive heavy rainfall put massive pressure on the towns sewer and drainage systems. Several homes around the car park were flooded on that occasion.
