RIP: Tributes paid following the passing of popular Tipperary-born Priest

It is with deep sadness that the passing has been announced of Monsignor JJ Fennessy, late of Kilnacarriga, Newcastle, Clonmel, and Atlanta, Georgia, USA. He died unexpectedly in the care of the staff of Emory St Joseph's Hospital, Atlanta.

Ordained in 1968, Monsignor Fennessy left Tipperary to begin his ministry in Atlanta, Georgia, where he went on to serve faithfully across nine parishes. Though much loved by his parishioners and colleagues in the Archdiocese of Atlanta, he always remained closely connected to his native Newcastle, returning home every year to visit family and friends.

Predeceased by his parents May and Thomas and his brother-in-law John O’Conner, he is deeply regretted by his brother David, his sister Mary Margaret, his sister-in-law Ann, his niece Karen and her family, his nephew Kevin and his wife Eleanor, and his niece Yvonne. He is also fondly remembered by Archbishop Hartmayer and his many colleagues of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, as well as by his extended family and friends on both sides of the Atlantic.

Monsignor JJ will be laid to rest with his order in Atlanta.

Following his passing, tributes have been pouring out online:

"The sorrow we are all feeling cannot be put into words. JJ was a bright light. An honorable man with a giant laugh. He was present during every conversation, always listened with intent. JJ we love you so very much and you will be missed beyond measure."

"Msgr. Fennessy was the most kind, loving and joyful priest I have ever known. I loved working with him as Youth Minister at St. Thomas in the 80's! And he always remembered my name wherever we met even years later! What a gift he was to so many blessed by his ministry! Rest in peace in Jesus' loving arms!"

"What a loving and wise pastor! He taught me so much. It was a pleasure to serve with him. I’ll miss his boisterous laughter and heartfelt joy in life itself."
