An Irish endurance swimmer is preparing to take on one of the country’s most ambitious fundraising challenges — swimming the length of the River Shannon in aid of two charities.

The event, titled “A Knight on the Shannon,” will see the swimmer cover 245 kilometres, spending around eight hours per day in the water. The journey will begin on Monday, September 1st in Dowra, Co. Cavan, and finish in Limerick, taking him through towns including Carrick-on-Shannon, Roosky, Athlone, Clonmacnoise, Shannonbridge, Portumna, Dromineer, Killaloe and O’Brien’s Bridge.

The marathon swim is being undertaken to raise funds and awareness for two causes:

  • Pieta, which provides free services to people in suicidal distress and those who have been bereaved by suicide.
  • KBG Syndrome Awareness, supporting families affected by the rare genetic disorder.
