Tributes have poured in online following Dan’s passing, with one person saying: “It is with regret that I learned of the passing of Dan. My sincere condolences to Phyl and family, sisters, brothers and all who grieve on your great loss. I first got to know Dan through hurling. He was the essence of decency both on and off the playing field. May he have eternal rest.”
Another said: “Sincere sympathy to all the Smyth Family on the sad passing of your beloved Dan, a devoted husband, father and grandad who will be missed by so many. A man with a huge heart, a mighty laugh and always a word of encouragement. May Dan now rest in eternal peace.”
One person added: “Our sincere condolences to all the Smyth family on the passing of Mr Smyth. We knew him as William’s father and had the pleasure of meeting him a few times. He was a very kind-hearted and fair person. Thinking of you all and we are sure that you have happy memories of him. May he rest in peace.”
One former pupil shared their kind memories of Dan, saying: “My deepest sympathies to Phyl, William, Freda, Margaret, Anna, Tom and Grace, and to Jack and the Kennedy family on the sad passing of Dan. He was a great teacher and an even better educator of young men. We all enjoyed catching up with him at our 30year reunion 3 years ago, when he was in great form. Dan was a great servant to CCR and they just don't make them like Dan any more. May his gentle soul rest in peace.”
