The In Our Hands campaign has recently shared a video detailing the solace felt by a local parishioner whilst in the Cathedral of the Assumption, Thurles.
The video was posted to the In Our Hands Facebook page, a page set up to track the fundraising efforts made towards the renovations taking place in the Cathedral.
In the video, Fr Jim Purcell speaks of a conversation he had with a parishioner in the church, in which he spoke of the peace he finds while he is in the church.
Fr Purcell says: “In the past couple of days I met a man, and he’s aware that we're kind of going on to Phase Two of the fundraising, and he said to me ‘I always find great solace in the Cathedral’, and when he said it, it sort of echoed a chord, that for many people, they come in here, just for solace, for peace, or quiet, or in a difficult or painful moment, that there's something, something kind of tranquil about the place, whether it be in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel or hear in the main body of the church before the tabernacle, people received something. A tranquil moment may be in the midst of difficulties or challenges or upset.”
The video was posted alongside a caption that read: “In today’s busy world, it’s easy to forget to pause.
“The Cathedral has always been a place of peace and solace - somewhere you can step inside, leave the noise behind, and take a moment for yourself. Whether you are facing difficult times, remembering a loved one, or simply need a quiet space to breathe, the Cathedral is here for everyone.

“For generations, it has stood at the heart of our community, a tranquil space where people come to reflect, pray, and find comfort.
“This is your reminder to take a moment. Call in, light a candle, sit in the quiet, for yourself, for your family, or for your friends.
“Places like this matter. They ground us, support us, and connect us across generations. With your help, we can ensure the Cathedral continues to be a place of peace and solace for many years to come.”
